ABOUT
BIG ISLAND
Biggest, youngest, and southernmost, the Big Island claims one
of the highest mountains on Earth and one of the most active
volcanoes in the world. It is the only place in Hawaii where
it snows, and yet the world's largest orchid industry and some
of the best coffee grown anywhere can be found here. The planet's
largest collection of astronomical telescopes is located just
below the 13,796-foot summit of Mauna Kea and one of the largest
privately owned ranches in the U.S. spreads out on its slopes. |

HIKE
A VOLCANO!
If you only have time to hike in one place on this island, the
numerous trails within the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNP)
are a great place to concentrate. The slopes of Mauna Loa and
HVNP are a trekker's paradise, with trails that last for an
hour or two, or for days, ranging from flat to treacherous.
One can explore from the hot seacoast of Puna and Ka'u, to 4,000
feet above sea level around the Kilauea Caldera, to the cold,
thin air atop Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. |
